This is one of the writing exercises my colleagues and I have every week.
And this is one which I enjoyed writing.
EXERCISE:
How well can you connect an idea with another different idea? Below is a list of sentences.
1. It was inevitable.
2. I couldn't believe it.
3. It wasn't what I expected.
4. She came like she said she would.
5. He nodded and quietly walked away.
6. Does he suspect something?
7. She wanted to see me.
8. It's not over yet.
9. I'll never know.
10. Not really.
Instructions:
Pick any two sentences from the list and connect them together by writing prose in between the two sentences (250-300 words). You can use narrative (first, second or third person), dialogue, whatever -- be creative, you can even choose what genre you like.
I couldn't believe it.
I was in a bar filled with Germans on a chilly night in a place called Thomas Reed.
It was lady's night and we could get in and have a drink for free.
I liked Thomas Reed. It had three different areas.
One for disco, another was a pub and the third was for bands.
But that fateful night knocked the life out of me.
I knew dancing was involved but no one ever told me there was going to be heavy grinding, pelvis shaking and sweat.
So I was with a few German friends and we hit the dance floor.
We had fun grooving and dancing when all of a sudden, this muscular, bare-chested, gigolo-look-alike started dancing in the middle.
Oh cool, a male exotic dancer, I thought and continued dancing by the sidelines.
The crowd made a huge circle around the dancing freak and I was wondering what would happen next.
All of a sudden, out of the freaking nowhere, he grabs and carries me by the waist and puts me on a chair!
This is what I get for looking too Asian!
I must have caught his eye since I was the only black-haired girl in the sea of blondes and brunettes to begin with.
Shit! Everyone looked at how dumbfounded and embarrassed I was.
My friends took pictures as this maniac was shaking his bonbon in front of my face.
I couldn't move and just sat still as he threw off his über-fitting clothes to the cheering crowd.
Next thing I know he's about to put a bandana over my eyes.
That was my tipping point - I couldn't stand this humiliation anymore.
I dashed out of the chair and quickly hid by the sidelines with my friends and the crowd laughing.
What a night, I thought and what an awkward moment it was.
So much for lady's night, all I ever wanted was to go out and dance.
I was UNWILLINGLY subjected to torture and humiliation without any escape.
Why me?
Where my German friends involved in all of this?
I'll never know.
And this is one which I enjoyed writing.
